Number two
This part of the novel has made me feel terribly bad for Micheal. The adult relationship he had as a child was far to much for him to handle and left him scared. It is as though he just goes through life in a daze, doing he is supposed to or expected to but not allowing himself to feel. He has changed completly, he cared greatly for Hanna and she broke that, so all of the sweet feelings he had turned sour, and he, in a way, decided it would be better not to feel at all. What we have learned about Hanna is also interesting. I had a feeling that she was illiterate from her insistence that he read to her in the beginning of the novel, however I did not realize the extent to which she felt shame. She knows that she is going to jail, and that she can get out of it if she admits to her illiteracy but she holds true to her pride. I also found it interesting how she showed no remorse on the stand. As though she is punishing herself by allowing herself to go to jail.
